A Dance Marathon is a long-format, student-led dancing event, typically running several hours or overnight, where participants stay on their feet for the duration and sponsors pledge per hour or give a flat donation. It is culturally distinct from an elementary dance-a-thon: the participants are older, they run it themselves, the endurance element is the point, and the leadership structure is part of what the event is for.

Why it works

  • It is genuinely student-led, which at high school and college level produces both more money and better participation than an adult-planned event.
  • The endurance format gives sponsors something specific to respond to and participants something to commit to publicly.
  • Long-format events build their own momentum and coverage in a way a one-hour event does not.
  • The leadership experience is a real outcome, not a side effect.

When to run it

Winter or spring, usually a single long session.

Planning it, start to finish

  • Choosing a length — four hours, twelve hours or overnight
  • Student leadership structure and what adults should and should not own
  • Overnight supervision, chaperone ratios and parental consent
  • Programming a long session so energy holds through the quiet hours
  • Food, hydration, rest rules and when standing time should end
  • Per-hour pledging and how commitment is tracked
  • Building it into an annual tradition rather than a one-off

Working from a printable plan is easier than a thread — see the planning checklist and the pledge sheet template.

Dance Marathon fundraisers for every kind of group

What works changes with who is running it. See guidance for PTOs, booster clubs, elementary schools and more on fundraising by group.

You are not doing this alone

Every Get Movin' group is paired with a Personal Event Coach — a former PTO/PTA volunteer who has run this before. Get Movin's company president and all of its fundraising coaches are former PTO/PTA members, teachers and volunteers. For a Dance Marathon, that is someone who has run this format before and knows where it goes wrong.

Your coach:

  • strategizes your budget goal with you
  • brainstorms incentives that actually motivate your participants
  • advises on promotion and timing
  • steers you away from the pitfalls they have already watched other groups hit

You also get the FundHub Event Toolbox — 100+ guides, templates, playlists and printables. Meet the coaches.

The platform behind your Dance Marathon

FundHub is Get Movin's online donation platform, built specifically for schools, teams and community groups by former PTO/PTA leaders. It carries 35+ tools. These are the ones that matter most here:

  • Personalized student webpages. A parent sets one up in about five minutes, and each page raises an average of $140.
  • One-click sharing to social, email and text, plus a sharing report showing how many parents are actually using it.
  • Volunteer Organizer. Post positions with dates, times and headcount; parents self-select their shift instead of a chain of emails.
  • Incentive Tracker. Enter your incentives and FundHub produces the distribution list by class or student automatically.
  • Instant, customizable donation reports for students, classes and the whole group.
  • Automatic ACH payout after the event, straight to the group's account.

Common questions

How is a Dance Marathon different from a dance-a-thon?

Length, age and ownership. A dance-a-thon is usually a short school event planned by adults. A Dance Marathon runs for hours or overnight, is planned and run by students, and treats the endurance itself as the point rather than as a gimmick.

How long should it be?

Four to six hours is a reasonable first year. Overnight formats work but require chaperone ratios, consent, security and a rest plan, and they are much easier to run once you have done a shorter one.

What should adults own?

Money, liability, facility and supervision. Everything else — programming, recruitment, theme, leadership structure — should sit with students, and taking that away is the fastest way to lose the participation that makes it work.

How do you keep energy up through the quiet hours?

Programme it in blocks with changes of pace rather than continuous dancing, and plan the hardest stretch — usually the middle third — before the day rather than improvising it.
