A Fit-a-Thon is a stations-based fitness event. Participants rotate through exercise stations — jumping jacks, squats, planks, shuttle runs — and sponsors pledge per station completed, per repetition or per minute active. Because it is indoor and modular, it runs in a gym, a studio or a classroom and scales cleanly across ages and ability levels.
Why it works
- It runs indoors, which removes the weather contingency that complicates every outdoor format.
- Stations scale by difficulty rather than by distance, so a wide age range participates in one event.
- It needs almost no equipment, and most of what it needs a PE department already has.
- It suits gyms and studios where floor time exists but apparatus time does not.
When to run it
Any time; works indoors, so weather is not a constraint.
Planning it, start to finish
- Designing stations that scale by age and ability
- Per-station, per-rep or per-minute pledging and which suits your group
- Rotation timing and how many stations you actually need
- Adapting stations for students with different physical abilities
- Running it inside an existing class or practice block
- Music, pacing and keeping energy up through the last rotation
Working from a printable plan is easier than a thread — see the planning checklist and the pledge sheet template.
Fit-a-Thon fundraisers for every kind of group
What works changes with who is running it. See guidance for PTOs, booster clubs, elementary schools and more on fundraising by group.
You are not doing this alone
Every Get Movin' group is paired with a Personal Event Coach — a former PTO/PTA volunteer who has run this before. Get Movin's company president and all of its fundraising coaches are former PTO/PTA members, teachers and volunteers. For a Fit-a-Thon, that is someone who has run this format before and knows where it goes wrong.
Your coach:
- strategizes your budget goal with you
- brainstorms incentives that actually motivate your participants
- advises on promotion and timing
- steers you away from the pitfalls they have already watched other groups hit
You also get the FundHub Event Toolbox — 100+ guides, templates, playlists and printables. Meet the coaches.
The platform behind your Fit-a-Thon
FundHub is Get Movin's online donation platform, built specifically for schools, teams and community groups by former PTO/PTA leaders. It carries 35+ tools. These are the ones that matter most here:
- Personalized student webpages. A parent sets one up in about five minutes, and each page raises an average of $140.
- One-click sharing to social, email and text, plus a sharing report showing how many parents are actually using it.
- Volunteer Organizer. Post positions with dates, times and headcount; parents self-select their shift instead of a chain of emails.
- Incentive Tracker. Enter your incentives and FundHub produces the distribution list by class or student automatically.
- Instant, customizable donation reports for students, classes and the whole group.
- Automatic ACH payout after the event, straight to the group's account.

Common questions
How many stations should a Fit-a-Thon have?
Six to eight is usually right. Fewer gets repetitive; more means long queues and children standing still, which is when the energy goes.
How do you include students with different physical abilities?
Design each station with a scaled version from the start rather than offering an alternative on the day. Every station should have a form that every participant can do, so nobody is visibly doing something different.
Should sponsors pledge per rep or per station?
Per station is simpler to track and easier for younger participants. Per rep suits older groups who want the effort to matter, but somebody has to count, so decide who before the day.
