Quick answer
Students register online, collect flat or per-lap pledges from supporters, jog laps on event day while volunteers count, then the school totals pledges and keeps 95–97% of the funds.

The Jog-a-Thon model in six steps

  1. Goal & date. Set a school-wide dollar goal and a date 4–8 weeks out.
  2. Online registration. Families build a student page in about five minutes.
  3. Pledge drive. Students share their page by text, email, and social; supporters give flat or per-lap pledges.
  4. Kickoff. An assembly explains the goal and reward and sparks momentum.
  5. Event day. Students jog laps while volunteers count and cheer.
  6. Close out. Total per-lap pledges, award incentives, deposit funds by ACH.

How the money works

Two pledge styles power a Jog-a-Thon: a flat donation (a fixed gift regardless of laps) and a per-lap pledge (an amount multiplied by laps completed, ideally with a cap). Online, supporters can pay instantly by card, PayPal, Venmo, or Apple/Google Wallet, and the school receives funds by automatic ACH deposit after the event.

Why online multiplies results

Paper pledge sheets only reach people a family sees in person. An online student page reaches grandparents, aunts, and friends anywhere — and a large share of donations come through social shares. That's why online Jog-a-Thons routinely out-raise paper events.

What each role does

Role Responsibility
Chair / PTO lead Owns the goal, timeline, and platform setup.
Teachers Encourage class participation and celebrate milestones.
Parents Build the student page and share it widely.

Key takeaways
  • The arc is always: goal → register → pledge → kickoff → run → close out.
  • Offer both flat and capped per-lap pledges.
  • Online payment + ACH payout removes almost all manual money-handling.
  • Clear roles keep the workload light.

Jog-a-Thon FAQs

How does a per-lap pledge get calculated?

Multiply the pledged amount by laps completed (e.g., $2/lap × 20 laps = $40). Encourage supporters to set a maximum so totals stay comfortable.

How do schools receive the money?

Online donations are deposited to the school by automatic ACH after the event; cash and checks are collected and recorded separately.

Can we run it entirely online?

Yes — see online Jog-a-Thon for the fully digital version.
